Our Patron – Dr Hilary Jones
As a Patron and passionate supporter of Northern Lights I’m thrilled to be part of the celebration of its last 30 years.
From the very first time I was privileged enough to fly out to Santa’s Lapland with a group of the most wonderfully deserving children with life limiting illnesses, who had been restricted for so long by their hospital walls having lifesaving treatments, I have been an ardent supporter of this fabulous charity.
30 years of love, caring and professionalism dedicated to over 500 children who have been taken on a holiday of a lifetime. 30 years where nearly £1 million has been raised to make sure that smiles are put on their faces and spirits are lifted sky high.
Northern lights well deserves its Queens Award for voluntary services (presented in 2015), an award equivalent to an MBE for any voluntary group.
Representatives were invited to the Queens garden party in May that same year and the charity also received the Points of Light Award from David Cameron. Such was the recognition of the great work of the charity that Northern Lights were also invited and attended the Patrons lunch on the Mall in 2016. Accolades galore and very well merited.
These children are the loveliest, most appreciative yet vulnerable children you could hope to meet. The courage with which they have faced their treatments, often prolonged and incessant, sometimes uncomfortable or even painful, they are a joy to travel with and to be around. They smile freely, hug warmly, chatter constantly and learn very quickly how to get the best out of a reindeer sled or a husky ride. And boy, can they throw a hefty snowball!! I should know, I’ve been on the receiving end!!! Much to the unbridled delight of the kids!
Each visit to see the real Northern Lights, in Santa’s home inside the Arctic Circle, for all these children are a little piece of winter magic. But it all takes careful planning, serious organisation, time and money. The love and care however, of course, is free and dished out liberally.
In all my years as a doctor and TV presenter nothing has moved me more. Please join us in supporting the charity and please continue to support Northern Lights in any way you can in future years, because it really does make a difference. Above all it allows these children to really live.
