Sharon gets her running shoes on!!
London Marathon has always been on my ‘to do’ list; every year I watch it on TV, slightly jealous and in awe of so many people who have managed to complete something so amazing and that requires so much determination.
Of course, this has always been a pipe dream as until just under two years ago I hadn’t done any running since high school (and then it was sprinting as I hated distance) but full of optimism I put my name into the London Marathon ballot.
Unsurprisingly this wasn’t to be my year so I looked for another challenge that I could complete and settled on the Chester Metric Marathon in October (great – more time to train and my friend said she would sign up with me!).
I also decided that I would like to fundraise for a charity and came across Northern Lights and the amazing work that they do. They are a brilliant charity that offers children with life limiting illnesses a once in a lifetime opportunity – Lapland, snow and Santa!

All signed up!!
A few weeks after signing up to Chester I got an email from one of the VMLM sponsors saying that I had won a place in the London Marathon! I looked at it in disbelief (then panic) and emailed back, convinced that they had made a mistake – they hadn’t, and I was in!! Can I really do this?
Excited by the chance to complete a once in a lifetime experience myself training started well however, a major health scare at the start of the year put my training on hold for a few weeks. About to throw in the towel (I was never going to be fast, but I’d hoped to at least get around in a respectable time) I needed something to refocus my efforts.
Later that day I found an email from Northern lights sitting in my inbox asking about my plans for Chester. I took this as a sign to carry on and I decided that I would ask if I could fundraise for both events.
By running for Northern Lights - 26.2 miles in London and 26.2km in Chester - I’m hoping to help more children to meet Father Christmas. The charity needs to raise around £2500 for each child to travel to Lapland so any donation is very much appreciated. Let’s help more children enjoy this festive period and make their dreams and wishes come true!
